The Problem of Obsession

Hold to the purity of the Teaching in your life, and the most beautiful
and joyous will come to you in due time. – Helena Roerich

There is no doubt that much of a beautiful, pure and highly spiritual nature exists on our planet. As co-workers of the Blessed Ones, we in TRIUNE along with other Lightworkers around the world try to contribute to this reservoir of goodness and positivity as much as we can in our time here. By keeping our attention focused on the highest and purest vibrations, we help cleanse the ethers of impurities and contribute to humanity’s spiritual development. Still, we know that at times the collective thoughts, words and actions of humanity can also be of an impure nature, requiring us to aggressively counteract this negativity and replace it with Light.

Clairvoyants see these impurities as dark, noxious masses surrounding the planet, and sensitives feel their jarring, physical impact on their auras and nervous systems, sometimes accompanied by nausea and blinding headaches. No thought, word or deed of an impure nature– no matter how small or seemingly insignificant – fails to have lasting consequences.

This problem is compounded by the misuse by some people of modern technology, which allows the rapid distribution and replication of disturbing materials on an almost exponential scale. Today we have unprecedented, immediate access to events happening all over the globe. We are bombarded by stories and images of every imaginable kind, many of which are jarring to a sensitive nature. Vulgarity and negativity leave indelible imprints both on our personal psyches and in the akashic ethers.

Just as the Blessed Ones and their Lightworkers can, by their love and unselfishness, influence Souls to perform acts of great kindness and compassion, so can dark disciples influence unwary or weak-willed Souls to commit unimaginable atrocities. The job of the dark disciple is made easier in a world such as ours, in which violence and vulgarity are already plentiful and the majority of people do not understand the occult implications of their association with such negativity. Seeing no harm, they open themselves to varying degrees of influence, ranging from subtle suggestion to outright obsession.

When times are critical and we are faced with unusual circumstances, the risk for obsession increases. In the book Supermundane II, the great spiritual teacher Helena Roerich said: “In the Puranas, it was predicted that toward the end of Kali Yuga (the present dark cycle in which we now live), humanity would be driven to acts of madness. “ This is, indeed, a bold statement; however, some of the news headlines of this past summer portrayed truly alarming incidents. As an example, the beheading of two American journalists and a British aid worker by members of the brutal terrorist organization ISIS and their thwarted plot to publicly behead even more randomly chosen citizens in Sydney, Australia could justifiably be called “acts of madness.” When faced with such gruesome images, we instinctively question how anyone could consider such barbaric behavior, let alone be driven to ultimately carry through on the impulse. Perhaps the only explanation may be obsession.

Obsession is a process in which an entity, either incarnated here on the physical plane or acting from the astral, seeks to completely control the will of another for selfish, often sinister purposes. This is a distasteful subject on which we certainly do not wish to dwell. However, the fact that we understand the occult implications of obsession requires that we not only recognize its existence but also work to eradicate its ill effects. We need not worry that we will bring harm to ourselves simply by acknowledging the existence of obsession. The Renaissance physician and alchemist Paracelsus is said to have advised:

"A healthy and pure person cannot become obsessed by them, because such larvae can only act upon men if the latter make room for them in their minds. A healthy mind is a castle that cannot be invaded without the will of its master . . . Evil spirits obsess only in those human beings in whom the animal nature is predominating. Minds that are illumined by the spirit of truth cannot be possessed; only those who are habitually guided by their own lower impulses may become subjected to their influences."

He further explained the nature of the process of obsession:

"While these larvae are in no sense imaginary beings, they are, nevertheless, the offspring of the imagination. By the ancient sages they were recognized as the invisible cause of vice, because they hover in the ethers surrounding the morally weak and continually incite them to excesses of a degrading nature."

Helena Roerich also wrote extensively on the subject of obsession and recognized it as a very real threat. In one of her letters to her students, she spoke of this problem. Her words seem relevant to today’s global situation.

"The spheres nearest Earth have become extremely overcrowded, due to mass killing through war, revolution, etc. And now these victims are longing to get in touch with a vital force in order to receive an illusion of life. Undoubtedly, the fact that there are such a great number of ill-balanced people at the present time is the result of such vampirism or obsession."

Additionally, the Master Djwhal Kuhl is said to have suggested that, for various reasons, our current time period would see an increase in the number of cases of obsession. One reason may be that the barriers between the physical and astral planes are said to be diminishing, and people in general are becoming more sensitive to these occult changes.

In the book Supermundane III, Helene Roerich remarked: “One can often observe that the obsessed act irrationally, driven only by the urge to commit evil. It should be understood that many villainies are committed in order to placate some invisible evildoers.” With this in mind, could the violent and fanatical actions of people like the terrorists involved with ISIS be attributed to obsession?

A TRIUNE member offered the following about obsession, or “possession,” as she calls it.

I used to have a friend who worked in homes for people who were mentally sick. She told me that she had noticed that some people became mentally deranged when quite young, and would even be destructive; but that, when they became quite elderly and not physically strong, they became mentally well again. She was quite convinced that these poor souls were possessed, but that when they could no longer be of physical use to the possessor, they were left alone and got better.

The following purifying prayer written by our healing network coordinator, Joann Monaco, is perfect for daily usage in confronting and controlling the problem of obsession.

God of our Hearts,
In pure humility, we invoke Thy Celestial Altar
where shines the All-Pervading Greater Light
and undying fire of Truth, Wisdom and Understanding.
This Sacred Light illumines eternally undimmed,
through the receptive hearts and souls of those who gather
now at this, Thy Sanctuary, in Unity and true fellowship.
We now attune with this all encompassing Divine Essence of the Cosmic
that it may infuse our Being
enfold us
and shine forth ever brilliantly out to all the world,
that Thy Will transmute, harmonize and heal humanity.
For the Greater Good of all,
may Thy Pure and Perfect Love radiate forth
bathing the souls of our world in Thy Eternal Light,
blessing us with Peace Profound.
Creator of All,
may The Holy Spirit protect us, our work, our planet and the life sustained therein.
It is the true and pure Christos, Thy Light in our hearts,
emanating from each and all,
that we honor in gratitude and stand as One.
Amen.
OM MANI PADME HUM
May the Greater Light sanctify this attunement for the Greater Good of All.
So Mote It Be!
